Look around: what doesn’t currently depend upon oil?

transition town sydenham

Imagine a world where most people can’t afford to run a car, and struggle to heat their homes; where food shortages are common and the many imported products we have come to rely on become luxuries.
This could all become a reality within a generation. The peak of global oil production is imminent – some say it’s already passed. Beyond this, supply will be in terminal decline and costs will rise. Add in the widely predicted effects of climate change that are already in motion, and there are critical challenges ahead of us all.

But the future needn’t be as bleak as this sounds

Facing change creatively could improve our quality of life:
  • Surviving on less oil might require a more localised approach to living, building stronger communities along the way
  • Self-sufficiency can lead to increased well-being. Growing your own fruit and veg, for instance, can be satisfying and healthy
  • Learning to live without oil could be much cheaper too – and more money in the pocket can’t be a bad thing!

We are Transition Town Sydenham, thinking and acting locally about the environment and how to live post-oil. We don’t think we can rely on governments or the hope that technological innovation will come to our rescue.

We do believe individual and local action can make a difference and would like to invite anyone interested to join us as we begin our journey.

If you think this is important, drop us a line!

Early activities include showing inspirational and informative films, developing projects about food security and helping people in Sydenham to grow food in a variety of ways.

A big thank you to everyone who came along and contributed to our recent film screenings:

The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil

This surprisingly relevant film gave an inspiring insight into how Cuba coped with the loss of most of its oil and food imports by transitioning to a system of organic farming and local urban gardens.

Grow-Grow Gardening Partnership

Do you have a garden that you are unable to maintain?

Or do you want to grow vegetables and other plants, but have no garden of your own?

Then drop us a line!

The Grow-Grow Gardening Partnership twins those with a garden, who cannot maintain it for whatever reason, with active people who want to grow vegetables or plants.
