What is permaculture?

Bringing permaculture to Sydenham

Transition Sydenham will identifying neglected spaces in Sydenham to develop into community gardens to be designed on permaculture principles.

The word ‘permaculture’ originated from permanent agriculture and permanent culture. It provides a guiding ethos and set of principles to support a way of living that is sustainable, healthy and enables productive food-growing within communities. Permaculture encourages self-reliance, an ability to grow food whether in a window box, urban garden or part of a community gardening project. It places importance on limiting consumption to what our planet can sustain. Permaculture practitioners design growing spaces that are self-maintaining, such as forest gardens that include self-seeding and perennial plants.
