The
word ‘permaculture’ originated from permanent
agriculture and permanent culture. It provides a guiding ethos
and set of principles to support a way of living that is sustainable,
healthy and enables productive food-growing within communities.
Permaculture encourages self-reliance, an ability to grow
food whether in a window box, urban garden or part of a community
gardening project. It places importance on limiting consumption
to what our planet can sustain. Permaculture practitioners
design growing spaces that are self-maintaining, such as forest
gardens that include self-seeding and perennial plants.
